Tasting dinner: “Culinary and wine trails in Bolesław Prus’s The Doll”
Prus’s books do not have to be merely read – they can also be savored. We invite you to a unique dinner with commentary, during which we will recreate the flavors and atmosphere of old Warsaw. We will follow in the footsteps of Wokulski, Rzecki and Izabela Łęcka, while our expert will explain what people drank in nineteenth-century salons and why. Five courses, five different stories and perfectly matched wines.
- To welcome you: French champagne (because the aristocracy never began an evening without bubbles). It was probably the Champagne vineyards that Wokulski saw on his journey to Paris.
- Delicate pike-perch fillet. The inspiration is a dinner at the Łęckis’ home, where pike-perch became the cause of a social scandal when Wokulski, contrary to strict etiquette, began eating it with a knife and fork. To drink: Mineral, refreshing Chablis. It pairs perfectly with the fish and, at the same time, alludes to the cool, aloof character of Miss Izabela.
- Exquisite duck pâté. This dish captures the spirit of Baron and Baroness Krzeszowski, who lived beyond their means, surrounding themselves with objects and flavors imported straight from Paris. The choice of pâté refers to the period’s fashion for all things French among the upper classes, where conversations often took place in Zola’s language. To drink: Elegant red Bordeaux. These were exactly the kinds of wines imported from France at the time to impress in society.
- Traditional beef roulade. This is a reference to the famous “Nelsonian roulades”, which the young Wokulski served at Hopfer’s eatery and which Rzecki recalled with great fondness. Hungarian wine (Węgrzyn) was the old shopkeeper’s absolute favorite drink, evoking memories of his battles in Hungary. To drink: Mature Hungarian wine. This is a direct nod to Rzecki’s past and his participation in the battles in Hungary during the Spring of Nations.
- Roast beef with mushrooms and pearl barley. The hearty roast reflects the solid nature of the “man of iron”, Wokulski, who ate nourishing steaks in Paris. Although associated with simplicity, barley appears in the novel as a refined delicacy served on silver platters during receptions at the Rzeżuchowskis’. To drink: powerful and full-bodied Syrah from the Rhône Valley.
- Dessert – a sweet surprise. The ending of the evening remains a mystery, but we guarantee it will be a flavor that would transport Izabela Łęcka herself straight to her “world of eternal spring”.
